Universal Studio Singapore Part 2

As I mentioned in my previous post, there are seven cities in Universal Studio Singapore, namely Hollywood, New York, Sci-fi City, Ancient Egypt, The Lost World, Far Far Away and madagascar.

Today, we will explore the first three cities.

Hollywood - The streets were built in such a way that you feel like you're there in Hollywood, not that I have been to hollywood but it looks like those in the movies. The biggest attraction in this city is the monster rock-n-roll musical, which my kids enjoyed. There are many merchandise and restaurants which we did not visit due to the rain and long queue. There are supposed to be different types of characters like woody woodpecker for us to take photos with but due to the rain, we did not managed to see any. That's my greatest regret.

New York - The attraction here is "Lights, Camera, Action! hosted by Steven Spielberg", a must see when you are there. They show you, right before your eyes, how an empty sound stage becomes the setting for a major hurricane about to hit New York City. It's something we don't get to see here in Malaysia and it enhances our understanding towards film making. My sister in law highly recommended the pizza in Loui's NY Pizza Parlor but we were lack of time and we took our lunch while queueing up for a ride.

Sci-Fi City - This is the city the boys love. The transformers ride thrilled them and they went back for a second round just before we left that night. To be honest, I love the transformers ride too. We were placed in a car (there's a name for it but I can't recall) and the car took us to a room where we see 3D transformers fighting. We were supposed to help Optimus Prime to defeat the evil and the motion in the car was so real. There was a scene where we felt like we were falling from a tall building and finally saved by Bumble Bee. What an experience! Besides that, my daughter loved the Accelerator. With all the whirling and twirling, I wonder how she survived the dizziness. The boys went wild when they saw the Galactica, the most exciting roller coaster ride in Universal Studio. However, they missed that due to the rain.

Working In The Food and Beverage Industry

It's the fifth day of Chinese New Year! This year, my brother gets to celebrate this joyous festival with family and friends. Since he went into the F&B industry, he had to work every Saturday, Sunday and when everyone else is enjoying Chinese New Year. This year, although he is still in this line, his work covers mainly training the staffs instead of working in the restaurant, hence the ability to rest on weekends and public holidays. I can see his relief and happiness. So I guess, even if there are any Sous Chef Jobs available, he would rather choose to remain in this company and have more time to spend with his family and friends.

Property Market

While some people say that the property market is booming, some others think that it's a housing bubble. I see houses being built everywhere and the price is exceptionally high. In the area where I stay, there are many newly launched semi detached houses and bungalows which are beautiful but I have not seen any houses with garage metal buildings for cars or storage. It's not common here in Malaysia but I'd like to have one next time when I purchase a house but not now. To me, it's not the time to purchase. I believe the time will come for the market to return and the price to decrease.

Happy Birthday

It’s his birthday! When I was young, I used to think a birthday gift is important. I feel good receiving one and I thought giving one is a must too. Now that I’m married and have children of my own, I start thinking that a family get together is more meaningful than a birthday gift.

So, for him, although an all inclusive vacation caribbean would be nice but I can’t afford it right now. I’m going to grab a cake, book a restaurant and get the whole family together for dinner. I think he would like the idea too.

A Shop of My Own

Just the other day, my daughter asked me if I would open a shop and I knew what she meant. She was encouraging me to start my own business, to open a shop of my own. That’s what I have been thinking lately but I kept procrastinating thinking that my children are still young and that I should spend more time with them rather than spending time working.

Maybe I am wrong, maybe my friend was right, I should find time for myself and have no regrets later on. When my daughter said, “Mom, what shop do you want to open? I want to help you before and after school.” Suddenly, I thought she has grown up. I thought this might just work for us; to have the children doing their homework and revision in the shop and when they are free, help around.

Well, my stand is rather firm now; I would start my own business when I can see some self-discipline in my children. I hope and I believe that would happen soon. By then, I can open a shop, decorate it, hang some personalized plaques around and make it a cozy place for everyone who steps in.

De-Stress

When you are stressful, what would you do? Do you go shopping? Do you exercise and sweat it out? Do you read a book or listen to the music? Maybe a real spa treatment at home would be a good idea. Although we may need to spend a little bit more for the whirlpool bath and spa as well as the raypak heat pump, it would be worthwhile.

No matter how you release your stress, the most important thing is that you should not bottle up your feelings. Stress can really bring about negative effects physically and mentally. So, do something and let that stress out!

Time For Me

Just this morning, my friend asked me if I’m interested in kickboxing, not that kind you watch on the television but it’s a kind of exercise, a little like dancing. I kept thinking, should I go for the trial class?

To be frank, I like dancing more than kickboxing. Ballroom would be nice but yoga would be more appropriate. I have wanted to go for yoga lesson since a few years ago but it is always the children who take up most of my time. One day, I must really get yoga mats at yogaaccessories.com and find time to attend yoga lessons.

Raising Up Teenagers

Looking at my friend’s confinement food, I told hubby I missed the confinement food my mother in law cooked for me previously. “Let’s have another baby.” He teased and off course, I told him it’s a big NO.

I have no fear in carrying a baby for nine months and I don’t mind the pain during labor but there’s one thing I’m afraid of, that is to raise a child. Baby and toddlers take up a lot of our time and we are often tired physically but those are bearable.

When our children become teenagers and have minds of their own, our task becomes more challenging. That’s the time peer influence comes in. That’s the time they may be influenced into smoking and taking drugs.

We have all heard of the physical changes and sufferings of alcohol and drug addicts and how they have to go for treatment in the inpatient rehab center. That’s why I cannot allow my children to touch alcohol and drugs. It’s easier said than done but I do hope they will understand the danger of alcohol and drugs.

Event Planning

Finally, my daughter bid goodbye to her kindergarten. She’s happy in her new school but I know she would miss dancing in the annual concert her kindergarten used to organize.

I have always enjoyed looking at the little ones during concerts. There is one thing, which I think the management of the kindergarten could look into, that is to put a stanchion in front of the main entrance to avoid the pushing and squeezing of the crowd.

I guess little details like that would ensure the success of an event.

A Field Trip During School Holidays

During the school holidays, we enrolled the children for some holiday programs and they signed up for a field trip to “Equestrian Putrajaya”, a horse riding school in Putrajaya. They were told that they would be seeing horses and horse equipment as well as taught how to take care of the horses.

The children were very excited and were counting the days when a few days before the trip, I received a text message notifying us of a change of destination from the horse riding school to a nature museum. You can imagine the “why” questions popping up every now and then.

Nevertheless, they looked forward to the field trip and when I saw their smiley faces when they returned, I knew they had enjoyed every bit of the trip. Instead of seeing horses, they saw many other animals and plants, which they love and that day, I was all ears.

My Own Career

Many of my friends asked me how I felt about staying home taking care of my children and sacrificing my career after I get my MBA. To many of them, it may seem a waste of talent but to me, I’d do anything for my children. The MBA certificate and the knowledge gained will not disappear and when my children grow up, I would venture into some businesses of my own.

I have once thought of selling Retail POS System which my friend created and I know I would be able to sell but that’s not my passion and I don’t think I would go far if I do choose this path. When THE day comes, I know I would be able to think of something to do and be happy doing it.

Employee Vs Self Employed

Being an employee is different from being self-employed. When you have business of your own, your company may not be big, you may not have a nice office and you may not have the chance to carry a leather briefcase to work but when you don’t have to look at your boss’s face and can have all the flexi hours you want, all these sacrifices become worthwhile.

Universal Studio Singapore Part 1

"Wow!" is what I would say if you ask me to comment about Universal Studio Singapore. I have longed to bring my children there since it was first opened to public. So, this holiday, since we did not go anywhere, we thought we would go on a Universal Studio Singapore one day trip.

The children were so excited but the weather was not cooperative. It had been raining almost everyday and we should have known but our eagerness to go there did not stop us from trying. Throughout the journey, we kept looking out of the car window only to see raindrops.

The moment we arrived, the rain actually stopped. The children were overjoyed, but not for long. It started drizzling shortly after that and kept raining til we said goodbye. Nevertheless, we bought each a poncho and continued our adventure.

Universal Studio Singapore is not big. It's like a mini Disneyland, I think (I have not been to Disneyland before but from the description of my friends, that's what I gathered). There are seven cities in it namely Hollywood, New York, Sci-Fi City, Ancient Egypt, The Lost World, Far Far Away and Madagascar. Each of these cities are very well decorated making us feel as if we were in the actual city.

The shows were excellent and they are what we should not miss (read details in my next post). The rides were awesome too. Although we did not manage to try each and every ride, we were quite contented that day. What we missed is to meet characters and snap photos as it rained the whole day and we were in our ponchos. That gives us another excuse to return, doesn't it?

Go Skiing

I love the snow but have not seen the real snow yet. I remembered bringing the children to the snow house in Genting Highlands some time ago and was glad that I survived the cold temperature.

One day, I told my husband, that I would love to go skiing with him and the children during winter. By then, I would be able to buy obermeyer ski clothing, pack my luggage, board the plane and go skiing.

Longer Eyelash

I love looking at people's eyelash. When I see boys or girls with long eyelash, I tend to admire them. A Christmas Baby

It was the most exciting event in my life and it happened on Christmas day. That day, we had no plans. We knew that the shopping complexes would be crowded and that it would be very difficult to find a parking space, we took our time having late breakfast and then went to our friend's house to deliver christmas presents to her children.

We chatted for several hours in her house and asked if she's ready to deliver a Christmas baby. There was no symptoms that she was going to deliver. I told her to walk more and suggested to bring her shopping. So, we brought her and her children to the nearest shopping complex.'

We were there for less than half an hour when she felt her amniotic bag broke. So, we sent her straight to the hospital and luckily the hospital was only a five minute drive from the complex. The hospital was a private hospital equipped with medical computers and up-to-date equipment. When we reached, the nurses quickly went through the necessary procedures and my friend was in the labour room waiting for the doctor to arrive.

She delivered her Christmas baby that night and we were all very happy for her. My children and her children suggested that we should call the baby "Santa". That would be his nick name from now on.

My First Work Place

How I miss my first work place, my ex-colleagues and my ex-boss. Every time when I drive pass that place, I would take a look at it. From the outside, there isn't much change but there must be lots of changes in there which I don't know. That was that place where I learn a lot, from material handling, stock taking, production control to employee payroll and administration. The boss trusted me and taught me many things. I took on many responsibilities too and when I left, my tasks on hand were passed on to three colleagues. This place would always be remembered.

His Cafe

On Christmas eve, we went to our friend's newly opened cafe. He named it "The House of Croissant" and we were all very excited while we were on our way there. Our imagination ran wild and we were imagining how the cafe would look.

"Wow!" was what the children said when they saw the all white building. Although there weren't any cedar furniture but the whole environment felt cozy and that's the place I would like to go for a Christmas dinner. I was really tempted to have my own shop one day when my children grow up.

Nasi Kerabu

This is quite a well known local dish and it is very famous in Kelantan, a state in Malaysia. However, I have seen stalls selling "Nasi Kerabu" in Kuala Lumpur but have never bought any.

When we were invited to the open house of our malay friend one day during Hari Raya Aidilfitri (the Malay's new year), we had the chance to try "Nasi Kerabu". Our friend did a great job in cooking the dish and it was really tasty. That was the first time hubby and I tasted the famous "Nasi Kerabu". We love it!

For those who do not know "Nasi Kerabu", take a look at the following picture. The rice is blue in color with some other dishes such as fried chicken or fried fish, salt egg, shredded mango, several types of leaves, vegetables and some would be served with keropok (fried crackers) which made it an awesome dish.

Love for Music

Music has always been something I like and whenever I hear music, I'd move and sway to the beat of the music. When my children were younger, I don't see their love for music and I thought they must have got my husband's gene. Now that they are older, their passion for music has grown.

My eldest son loves the piano. He would take the initiative to play the piano everyday. My daughter loves dancing and she thinks she loves the violin. My second son wants to play the guitar. He has been bugging me to send him for guitar lesson one year ago. Once, he saw a guitar in my uncle's house and he wanted to play the guitar. My uncle saw his enthusiasm and wanted to give him his old guitar but we declined. He doesn't even know how to play yet. I guess if he were to see gibson gibson guitars, he would love them!

Well, the three of them have verbally agreed that they would form a band to play "Canon in D" on my sister's wedding day, one on the piano, one on the violin and the other on the guitar. Let's hope they practice really hard and when they do play one day, I'd be the proudest mom ever.

Self-Control

It is every child's dream to own a jeux xbox or should I say it is the dream of most children? I'm pretty sure my sons would be overjoyed to have one as their birthday gift. However, we are hesitant to get them one because they have not shown self-discipline and self control. To be involved in a game is alright if and only if there's no addiction. Those Were The Time

Looking at my growing up daughter brought back memories of old times, when I was a girl, before I carry the responsibilities of a wife and a mother. Although I can't recall many of the events, there are some which I would never forget. I love the time when I was in the university. It was the most relaxing and enjoyable time in my life. We used to hear about proms before we step into the university campus but when we were there, there were no proms and we did not have the opportunity to dress up in prom dress. However, we had something similar like the management night. It was a night when all students of the management faculty gather in the hotel ballroom, dressed in their best attire, socializing and getting to know each other through chatting, dance and games while enjoying the wonderful meal served.

Sushi Zanmai

We are sushi lovers and have been eating sushi at Sushi King, Japanese buffet and Japanese restaurants. When my friend told me about Sushi Zanmai, about how good the sushi are, I knew I had to try.

So, one day, we went to Sushi Zanmai in The Gardens shopping mall. We had to queue up but it was worth the queue. The food served is delicious and we love them. Since then, we were "addicted" and would dine at Sushi Zanmai whenever we feel like it.

Malaysia Property

The word "property" has been very familiar since I got married to a man who knows a lot about properties. He has always said that saving in fixed deposit and investing in children’s education fund is a big NO. To him, if we want to invest, investing in properties would be one good option besides investing in the stock market. However, timing plays an important role.

The price of Malaysian properties, if compared to other countries in Asia, is relatively low despite the increasing price in the Malaysian property market itself these few years. While we could easily purchase a double storey semi-D in Cheras or Kajang at the price of RM60 thousand - RM70 thousand a few years ago, now, without a million ringgit, you can't afford a house of a similar type.

With the increase of property price in Malaysia, you would imagine a lower demand and fewer transactions in the property market but the actual scenario was of the opposite. People actually buy and sell properties very actively. Part of this group of people are those who want a shift from a smaller unit to a bigger unit while another part of the group consist of investors who buy and sell, hoping to earn some fast money.

Properties agent are the ones who would beam with joy when the property market is active. I know of a person who became a property agent a year ago, letting go of her current job of transporting children to school. Well, if you want to buy or sell properties, you could go through the property agent but if you don’t, you can always do it online via websites like Propwall, Malaysia’s largest property websites.

One thing good about online properties searching is that it enables us to preview various types of properties in the comfort of our home before deciding on which to view physically. Do with Passion

Steve Jobs is a person I admire and his passion brings him very far. I believe that everyone of us should do something we are passionate about. Whenever I talk about passion, I think of my brother who has an IT degree but ended up in the food and beverage industry. He has always liked cooking and I thought he would like Chef de Partie Jobs but now I know he also likes training. He's now a trainer in a F&B company and I can see that he's happy with his current job. I must remind myself to support my children and encourage them to go for something they like instead of deciding their course for them.

Traveling Together

It's always good to see cousins getting along well. We are fortunate that our children are close to their cousins and we used to go traveling together. We have been to many places together such as Singapore, Penang, Genting Highlands and even just around Kuala Lumpur and the best thing is that they are of the same age range. I was asked not once, but several times, when I was with all the six children, if they are all mine. I always answered no but I think I should say yes the next time this question arises. I would love to see the surprise look on their face.

The next destination we plan would be a farther place and I think getting the children to pack their jansport backpacks and go backpacking or camping together with their cousins would be fun and different too.

Show Her Your Love

Women wish that their other halves would remember their birthday and wedding anniversary and that must be accompanied by gifts. Well, not every woman place importance in gifts but many do. Home Cultured Yogurt

We love yogurt and we used to buy yogurt from the supermarket. When I got to know that one of my friends culture yogurt at home, I was interested to find out more. Then, one day, I saw this yogurt maker in an organic shop and it seemed pretty simple. All we have to do is to mix cold water from the refrigerator with the yogurt powder, shake well and put the tub into the yogurt maker half filled with hot boiling water.

So, I bought the yogurt maker set and started making yogurt at home. Look at the texture, it's pretty nice, isn't it?

Christmas This Year

Christmas is just around the corner and this is the time my sister would fly back from Australia. This year, due to her work load, she is still unsure if she can come back for Christmas. My children are asking every now and then and hoping that their favorite aunt would be able to spend this year's Christmas with them. As much as they await her return, they are eyeing the gifts she would bring back for them. As for me, I'm looking forward to have baking sessions with my sister.

I have never seen a recreational vehicle in Malaysia but there are many recreational vehicles (rv) in western countries, some for sales and some for rent. If I were to start a business here in malaysia, would it be a good idea to start a vehicle rental company which also rent recreational vehicles to tourists or the locals? I know I would definitely rent a rv when I go on a vacation, at least once, for the kids' exposure. So, this idea might work. To start a business like that means I have to start hunting for recreational vehicles and other vehicles, getting contacts for rv repairs and maintenance as well as setting up a record system easy enough for me to record and track. It wouldn't be easy but that's one idea I could think about.

Stand Out Among Others

If I were to ask, "Would you like to be noticed by people, to stand out among your friends and be the star instead of the friend beside the star?" I guess many would say yes. To be noticed by people needs you to have certain kind of outlook, that is you must be pretty or handsome or if you have position and power such as being the head girl in the school or if you are famous when you win a competition like American Idol. However, despite all these which many may not have, you can still stand out among others and make heads turn when you wear funny shirts. You bet people would look at you instead of your friends around you.

Our Very Own Spring Onion

Here, spring onion from my backyard! Yes, the kids planted and harvested these and you know what? They usually dislike eating spring onions but they actually ate these spring onions when I told them they were the ones they planted.

Yesterday, I saw my onions with roots and sprouts and instead of throwing away, I told the kids to go plant them. It's kind of fun to see them getting involved in planting. Way to go children!

Children love to play games, especially computer games. If you put an iPad, a gameboy or a wii in front of them, most of the children would pick up the device and start playing. Whenever my husband's family get together, his younger brother would bring back his wii console and wii remote controller and the children would gather around him asking to play the motion sensing game. They could play the games for hours and if we do not ask them to stop, it would go on and on. One year ago, I was determined to help my friend to promote his company's POS systems and maybe start my part time job. However, I did not start that job, giving myself excuses that my children need me and my time should be reserved for them. This has been the excuse I keep giving myself and until today, I did nothing to build up my career which I always wish I would have when my children grow up. I keep telling myself that they are still young and they need me. Today, I think they have grown up enough for me to do something for myself but when I see their exam result, I stopped "dreaming", stopped "thinking" and stopped "planning". I have even put aside my party planning to cater for my children's needs. When will the time come when I can shout out loud: "I have started!"

A Trip to Genting Highlands

Our trip to Genting Highlands was awesome! We went up the mountain with hubby's brother's family and it was good to see the children getting along well like buddies with their cousins. We were there one day before Hari Raya (Malay New Year) and that day was perfect as the crowd was not as big as the crowd on the following day when we checked out. We love to bring our camera whenever we go on vacations. That day, hubby told me that the camera was not working properly and at that moment I wished I had the casio camera with gps. After awhile, the camera seemed to function and we were glad we managed to snap photos of the kids! It was an enjoying trip for the two families.

Holiday Fun

It's holiday! Although it's only ten days and it's ending soon, it's good to have a break from our routines. It's the only time I don't have to wake up early in the morning, no cooking, no cleaning and no nagging of children to complete their homework. How relaxing! Traveling, although it's only domestic vacation, has been fun for us and the kids. We have just returned from Genting Highlands after a night's stay in Theme Park Hotel, lots of fun rides in the theme park and an experience of snow and coldness in the Snow World. My Tenant

When one of my tenants said she wanted to shift to another house, we told her to go ahead but after a few days, she told us that she didn't want to shift anymore. She said she had surveyed other houses and still thinks that our house is the best. According to her, it's very convenient staying in our house because we provide everything from water heater to reverse osmosis drinking water filter system; from washer to dryer; from microwave oven to food steamer. I guess she wanted to shift because she did not get along well with her room mate but what's more important for her now is the environment and facilities we provide. I do hope she will learn how to get along with her room mate soon.

I love these cupcakes but without the cream. Why cream then? It was someone's birthday and I knew she would get a birthday cake later that day. When my friend and sister asked me what gift I want for my birthday, I told them I do not want anything. Our Second Camping Trip

If you have read my previous post, you would know that we went camping and that we saw wild boars. We actually went to a forest reserve about 28km from where we stayed. There was a river and that was the best spot for the kids.

For hours, they stayed in the river, playing with the cool water. Swimming was not possible but they had fun in their own little ways. While they had water play, some fathers joined the fun while the mothers were busy preparing food.

The forest reserve is equipped with chalets and public toilets. There were also tables and chairs which were made to look like logs all around the forest reserve. Well, I guess it would be good if they use log furniture. Then, the furniture will look more natural.

That night, we had campfire. The kids sat on the ground while some older folks sat on some stacking chairs which a member brought. How thoughtful of him! We played games and danced until we saw the wild boars. That was when everyone stopped and headed to bed with fear. Luckily nothing happened that night. The night was long for the adults who tossed and turned and couldn’t get to sleep but the night went on fast for the kids who were all tired and slept soundly until the next morning.

An Adventure for The Kids

Last Saturday, we went camping with several other families and this time around we went to a forest reserve and our campsite is just by the river. It was our second camping trip with the kids.

Everthing went on pretty well (I'll blog about it in my next post) until that night when we were playing games and dancing when someone shouted, "wild boars!" Everyone turned and saw three wild boars walking towards our tents. Then, a car with two young men drove passed us, sending the wild boars into their hiding place.

The two young men told us that they were going to get their guns. I'm not sure if they have rifle scope to help them aim better but the next thing we knew was the kids were scared and wanted to go home.

Luckily, we booked a chalet and into the chalet we went. The kids slept there that night and we did not hear any sound of the gun. I guess the two young men were not able to find the wild boars. What an experience for the kids!

Balloon Sculptures Competition

Her Birthday Celebration

My daughter's birthday is just around the corner and this year, I told her we are not sending out invitations for a birthday party but rather she would celebrate with her friends in school. She seems to be able to accept my suggestion pretty well. Off course, I'll be preparing party packs for her friends. I got her excited by inviting her to decorate the party packs with me. "This is for Matt and this is for Lin." she was happy to be able to pick and choose the designs for each of her friend. I'm pretty sure her friends would like the party pack and the party favors in it.

A Birthday Without Him

Yesterday, I had a wonderful birthday. Although hubby was not with me, I was lucky to have my children and friends by my side. It was really nice to receive greetings from old friends, blogger friends and friends from the society I joined.

When I woke up early in the morning, I had a pleasant surprise when I opened the gift boxes prepared by my children. All of them wanted to give me something although I told them I only wanted one gift, to have good, well behaved children with self discipline. "We're working on that, mom." That's what they replied.

My eldest son bought me a multi-colored pen and gave me an "ang pow" (red packet with money in it). He wrote me a note as well but hid it and gave me a map to hunt for it. How fun! Then, my second son gave me a love shaped paper which he folded with a piece of A4 paper but his words made me feel touched. He wrote 'Mummy, you are always in my heart' and 'You are my best mummy' with a picture of a butterfly which he labeled as 'Mummy' and a caterpillar which he labeled as 'himself'. How sweet of him! These two sons of mine, although naughty at times, they do love me in their own little ways. I can't imagine how they'd turn out to be when they start liking blac label clothing and courting girls. I hope our relationship would still be good and they would still like to come home.

My daughter took a recycled paper and drew me a house full of love and stars. I told her I liked that and I wish our house will be full of love too.

Genting Balloon Art Festival

Genting Balloon Art Festival was held on 11 - 26 June 2011 in Genting Highlands. If you happened to be there, you would have seen beautiful balloon sculptures everywhere as well as fun and exciting events such as Children's Giant Balloon Ride, Sport Stacker Demonstrations & Workshop, Balloon Costume Runway Competition and Transformers Giant Replicas Display. We were there but only on the second last day of the festival. Late but at least we managed to see the demonstration and the balloon sculptures.

A Maid For Him

He has finally been discharged. For the past two and a half weeks, he was in the hospital, suffering. Now that he is home, we want to get a maid for him but it's difficult getting an Indonesian maid at this moment but we are trying our best. However, getting a maid may, on one hand means extra help but on the other hand means installing security cameras at home to monitor her in case she's not honest.

With the family's current condition, everyone is busy. There isn't time for me to plan a proper birthday party for my daughter. As time is running out, I wish I could just get something special like the hand dipped fancy berries for her friends to eat at school on her birthday. That would be really nice! Meeting Ex-Colleagues

We once worked in a construction company but through time, one by one left the company. One day, we met and I got to know that some of them are still in the construction industry while some others have left the industry.

I remembered the time when we worked together. We did a few projects of residential buildings. We talked about building materials, construction period, progress reports and etc. Now that I'm out of this industry, I wonder if buildings are still traditionally constructed or have they slowly been switched to metal building construction which is more durable and lower in construction costs.

It's good to meet my ex-colleagues again. They have not changed much but the only difference now is that they have families of their own.

Life is Unpredictable

Life is unpredictable! One moment he was joking and the next day he was in the hospital. He was in and out of the surgery room, in and out of the intensive care unit and now still lying in the ward waiting for everything to go back to normal so that he could go home.

While some people are taking diet pills hoping to slim down, to look better in front of their colleagues and friends, he has no time to worry about appearance but to hope for a fast recovery. I pray for his recovery and I do hope he will recover soon.

Ipoh Curry Chicken Bread

This is the famous curry chicken bread from Restoran Yau Kee, Ipoh. Well, the picture was not well taken and the bread looked dark because we baked it in the oven to heat it up. When we were back in hometown last weekend, my husband brought my son to his room in his old house. He showed our son a wooden book rack which he made when he was young. Our son was really impressed as he too likes building blocks and making things from scratch. My husband was once a civil engineer and his father worked in the construction industry. I remembered helping them in purchasing building materials such as roof tiles, floor tiles, bricks, metal hose, sanitary wares, roof truss and etc. There are lots to do but lots to learn too. It has been an experience I would never forget.

The other day when I was standing in front of the mirror, I saw a strand of grey hair and I had to admit that I'm no longer a young girl. I remembered our younger days of listening to songs, buying players, speakers and speaker stands, crazy over certain singers and actors and the days of studying then courtship and dating til marriage and having children. We see changes through time and now, it's all work and family and no time for ourselves. Whatever I do, my focus now is on children. When they study, I study and when they have exams, I have stress! My daughter's birthday is coming soon. Last year, she had the most unforgettable birthday party but this year, I have decided not to throw a party but to let her celebrate in school with her friends. After this year, they would graduate from their kindergarten and won't be seeing each other anymore.

Yesterday, my daughter asked me: "Mom, I'm a big girl now. Can I choose a birthday gift myself? Can you buy anything which I choose?" My mind was running fast, what would she ask for? So, I answered, "Yes, if the gift is not too expensive, not too dangerous and if it's useful or suitable." Let's hope my answer is wide enough to cover things which I won't buy.

A Morning Walk

Saturdays are days I can sleep a little longer and wake up later but one Saturday morning, we woke up before 6am, changed and got into the car towards Broga. For no reason, my face turned red and the next day before I knew what was happening, the skin around my cheek started peeling off. It has never happened before and I was determined to get it healed. I opened the drawer where I put my ointment, medicine and cream. There was my papaw ointment, a bottle of tea tree oil, my body butter, no Lipofuze and nothing for my face. What was wrong with me? For several days, I washed my face only with water and nothing else. For several days, I was afraid to look at myself in the mirror. Several days of suffering finally came to an end and now I look like before but I am still guessing what happened.

We can't underestimate the power of blogs. It has the power to convey messages to people all around the world. I received many inquiries about fungates system and kindergartens using this system because I have written a post about fungates system three years ago.

Recently, someone sent me an inquiry about kindergartens and she asked for my opinion about several kindergartens around her area. I was too busy to reply but I will, when I am free. I told her that I would choose a kindergarten based on several criteria.

Environment is one of the many things I would consider when I choose a kindergarten. Many kindergartens have conducive environment for children. They are equipped with commercial playground equipment and cute murals on the outside as well as books, teaching aids, small and safe tables and chairs and sanitary ware, all suitable for children.

Next would be the education system, whether it's fungates, montessori or traditional and the quality of the teachers and the management. Most importantly, it is important to choose a kindergarten which our children are comfortable with and would happily attend.

Our Trip to Cameron Highlands

Two weeks ago, we went up to Cameron Highlands with hubby’s brother and his family. It was a bad trip because we were stuck in a jam on our way up the mountain and we did not manage to go anywhere. It was a bad timing for it was Labor Day and many people were there. The usual ten minutes drive turned one hour and we decided to take our dinner and turned back home rather than to be stuck in the crawling traffic again to reach the open market.

Along the way up, we saw vegetables farm. Although it was not hydroponics, which I hope to see but it was an eye opener for the children. Too bad we did not manage to buy any fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers and we did not have the opportunity to visit the strawberry farm and tea plantation and the children even vomited in the car on the way back home.

When we asked the children if they want to visit Cameron Highlands again, they shook their head. Me too!

Hubby quit his job as an engineer to start his own business many years ago. It was not easy at first but his determination and his persistence brought him far. Although he doesn’t have a big company with fifty or hundred staffs, I would say his business is profitable. One day, when his business expands, I know he would consider having an office and employing more staffs but for the moment, a home office is sufficient for him to run his business.

Just the other day, my friend asked if I still provide cheap printing and I told her I have ended my printing business but would still help friends to print from home. She needed to print her daughter’s project.

So, she came that night with her thumb drive, telling me that she did all the typing. From our conversation, I got to know that nowadays, students’ school projects have become their parents’ homework. There are students who pass up beautifully done projects, obviously done by their parents, and they get praises from their teachers. On the other hand, students who complete the projects themselves would hand up their projects only to be rejected by their teachers asking them to redo.

When I visited Penang last Saturday, I arranged a meet up with my best friend. We have not met for a long time but we still keep in touch. She has not changed much but I guess has put on a little weight.

When she told me she’s into selling insurance and asked me to support her, I knew I would give her all the support I could. She’s a friend I trust and I know her responsibility and capability would make her a very good insurance agent.

Lately, I have been thinking about investment. Should I buy gold coins, unit trust, insurance, share or currency? I guess insurance would be one option if I were to support my friend. The share market may be risky but I guess if we find the right share, it would be worthwhile. However, before going into any of these options, I’d better do some information searching online.

Facial Treatment for Women

Most women would go for a facial treatment once in a while. When I tuned into the radio the other day, there was this topic about the importance of women taking care of themselves even when they are married and have children of their own. According to the speaker, women should go for a facial treatment once a month.

Sometimes I wonder if I am normal for the very reason that I have never been to a beauty salon or spa nor have I done any manicure or pedicure. I guess I have devoted all my time for my children. I don’t even have time to care whether I have blackheads on nose or not.

I know it’s not right. How can a woman neglect herself just because she has children? She too needs time out, time to pamper herself and relax. That’s what I lack and maybe if I have that little time for myself, my stress wouldn’t build up.

Aeroplane Meal

This is not the kind of meal we get on the airplane but a kiddy meal served in a Japanese restaurant in Jusco Malacca. I have forgotten the name of the restaurant but all of us love the food sold there. This was what my children ordered. The presentation was excellent. Put the quality of food aside, this kind of presentation would surely attract kids to place an order. What I like most is the "Ramen" or the Japanese noodle.

Training The Children

Being a mother is never easy. On one hand, we want our children to be independent but on the other hand, we worry that they would be hurt in the process of achieving independence. Today, the world is not safe anymore, especially here in the city I live in. Crimes are increasing. There are many cases of snatch theft, kidnapping, and even calls to parents asking for money, claiming that their child is captured. Although electronic pickpocketing has not happened here but I believe it will happen soon.

One example is when we go shopping together as a family. When my son wanted to go to the washroom, my hubby would ask him to go himself but I would worry. Off course, I believe that he knows his way to the gents but what I worry most is that he would be captured by bad people. The same goes to being home alone.

Let's Go Camping

I wish to plan a birthday party with the theme "Let's go camping". I have always love camping during my younger days. Now that my children have grown up, I wish I could bring the camping environment and camping mood back home. It must be a night party with outdoor fire pits like the campfire. Although it may not be so real but at least they could have a feel of how camping is like. I have even thought of the party favor, a handmade campfire for each kid to bring home. It would really be nice to plan that party.

When Women Age

When a woman ages, she would face many so called challenges, from wrinkles to menopause. When the time comes, instead of talking about fashion and how to discipline our children, we would talk about Hormone replacement therapy and how to cope with our children all overseas. Time flies. Although I'm not there yet, I'm on the way and soon, I'll be a woman above forty, then fifty, then sixty. It's really not far away.

Traveling Together

It has been ages since I traveled and I have been telling hubby how much I wish I could go for a trip overseas. One night, he suddenly said: “Let’s go to Hong Kong.” My response was: “To Disneyland with the kids?” Yes, that was what he meant and I was delighted.

My dream is to let the kids pack their own luggage set and go traveling with us. I always have this vision of them dragging their own luggage walking into the airport. If it has to be a trip for hubby and I without the kids, I would think twice. How can I leave them behind and enjoy myself? Off course, it is absolutely alright for the mother to take time out but for me, I would worry about them. I know it would be tiring to drag the kids along but isn’t it better to experience physical suffering instead of mental suffering?

Outlast Technology

Sleep is by far the most important thing for me. If I do not get sufficient sleep, I would suffer the next day. These few nights, I did not sleep well. The weather was hot and I would toss and turn. It was worse for my children. Some nights, when I checked on them, they were sweating even in the air conditioned room and I had to change their pajamas and turn their pillows.

My parents were with me for the past six days and I appreciate their presence and their help during these days. Every morning when I take breakfast with my mom, she would ask if I take supplements. She has always been urging me to buy “Surbex Zinc” but I always ended up with other supplements.

When she asked me what supplement I’m taking, I showed her. All supplements were given to me either by her or my mother in law and every time when I finish taking, the two kind ladies would give me some more. If you were in my position, would you buy anymore supplements on your own?

My mother in law always manages to buy cheap supplements from her sister and she would tell me how good it is and how genuine it is. I don’t know if it’s true but if she gives me, I’ll take it. I never wanted to hurt her feelings. So, mom, now you know why I don’t buy “Surbex Zinc”, I have too many supplements in my house.

Boarding School

Recently, I have thought a lot about children’s education. A friend of mine has children of my children’s age and whenever we meet, we discuss about books, teaching methods and school system. The Malaysian education system has lots of room for improvement. The system is, in my opinion, a little too rigid to groom creative students. A student with lots of ideas and creativity would eventually be suppressed and become “robots”.

I was from the local university but I hope my children would be able to go overseas to further their studies in future. The children in western countries are more exposed and they have projects and extra-curricular activities and they are given ample opportunities to give ideas, to explore their talent and passion.

I love the idea of a Boarding School. The Queen Ethelburga’s boarding school is one good place for students. Those who stay there excel in their studies and sports events. These students do not need to travel to and fro and on the other hand they do not feel home sick because of the warm and homely atmosphere plus house parents who are patient, loving, energetic and have good humor and common sense. No wonder parents feel relieved leaving their children in the boarding school.

When I click “Contact us” in the webpage, I saw a telephone number for people overseas to call and I have an urge to call them to enquire more about their senior school. I feel my children need a school system like this when they finish their primary schooling. I’m still thinking.

Birthday Party with a Theme

Last year, my sons had a birthday party and this year they are asking for another. Children are children, once they are exposed to birthday parties with a theme and had experienced how fun the party could be, they would not want a normal party anymore. What theme would they pick if I agree to hold one for them this year? Most boys like cars and baseball and would be happy to receive baseball gifts but I don't think my sons like these themes. They would prefer something more adventurous, I guess. I'll wait and see what they would request.

My Dream Business

Although I'm into party planning, it's a partnership between my friend and I. If I were to start a business on my own, I would love to sell educational toys, gifts and crafts materials. Should I open a retail shop or should I start an e-business? If I have a retail shop, it would incur material handling cost, shop rental, employees' salary and other overhead expenses. If it's an e-business, it would be much cheaper and I can do it in the comfort of my home. The only drawback would be my house would soon become a store and I can't focus too well with children calling "mummy, mummy." but if I get them involved, it may be a great opportunity for my children to learn other skills.

Clean Air

I wonder if we should have air cleaners in all our rooms. Both my son and I have sinus problem and we used to have blocked nose during the nights. He used to complain: "Mummy, I cannot breathe." and I know how difficult it is but he has to learn how to accept and go through it. I guess we are also allergic to dust. So, maybe an air purifier would be the perfect tool to provide clean air at home.

Clean Restaurants

My children love to walk into restaurants with contemporary furniture and a cozy dining environment. They hate going to coffee shops with tissue paper on the floor. They like clean places but they know nice restaurants also mean higher price.

Every time I do not cook, we have a tough time deciding on a restaurant. Each of them has his or her own choice and when they start debating about which is better, hubby or I often ask if they could compromise or else they would have to follow our choice. When children have to ask us about every little thing, we worry they do not have a mind of their own but when they can choose what they like and insist on it, we worry they would become too demanding. The challenge for us as parents is to strike a balance.
